Flour Power History

In 1909, Alfred Nickles established a small bakery in Navarre. Today, the company boasts three bakeries located in Navarre, Lima, and Martins Ferry, servicing 300 commercial routes spanning Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia. In 1998, the business expanded the Navarre bakery by an impressive 65,000 square feet, concurrently closing a bakery in Indiana.

Furthermore, the corporation invested in cutting-edge equipment in Navarre, enabling swifter, more automated production of bread and buns, with over 100 loaves being produced per minute. This strategic move took advantage of the decline of the Hostess brand, allowing for increased production of doughnuts and the introduction of an expanded line of rye bread. The bakery has also extended opportunities to some former Hostess employees.

Among the roughly 500 employees at the Navarre bakery and home office, George Bennington reflects on his more than 30 years with gratitude, considering himself fortunate to hold a unionized production job that pays well above the minimum wage. He also appreciates the continuity of family ownership. Kathy McKain, another dedicated bakery production worker with 12 years of service, earns $13.75 per hour and is grateful for the health benefits that come with her position. Additionally, it’s noteworthy that Nickles is set to be inducted into the prestigious Baking Hall of Fame, alongside the founders of Schwebel’s, Pepperidge Farms, and Sara Lee.
