About La Reyna Bakery
La Reyna Bakery has a rich history that dates back to 1965 when Clemente and Josephina Gutierrez established it in the quaint village of Woodlake, nestled in Tulare County of the San Joaquin Valley, California. After six successful years, the couple made a pivotal decision in 1971 to relocate to San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District, bidding farewell to their Woodlake facility. In their new neighborhood, they worked diligently at Dominguez Bakery La Flor De Jalisco, owned by their relatives, for five years before seizing the opportunity to open their own bakery.
On July 7, 1977, La Reyna Bakery found its current home at 3114 24th Street, a significant milestone in their journey. Today, forty years later, La Reyna Bakery remains a cherished family venture, still owned and operated by the Gutierrez family. Their enduring commitment to delivering the finest Mexican pastries is unwavering. The recipes they use today have been passed down through generations, starting from the way they were crafted back in 1965.
To create the most authentic pastries imaginable, La Reyna Bakery utilizes only the freshest ingredients: eggs, milk, fresh yeast, flour, water, sugar, and salt. Salvador Ramirez, the Head Baker and brother-in-law of Clemente and Josephina, has been an integral part of La Reyna for the past 32 years. He learned the art of baking from the original bakers who were present when the bakery first opened its doors in 1977, and those bakers, in turn, learned from their own teachers, forming an unbroken lineage of knowledge and tradition.
At La Reyna Bakery, we understand the significance of traditional holidays and the importance of indulging in freshly baked, authentic desserts to enhance the festivities. Whether you’re observing Los Dias De Los Muertos on November 2nd or celebrating Roscas de Reyes on January 6th, we have you covered.
Los Dias De Los Muertos is a cherished holiday dedicated to honoring the memory of the departed. During this time, people prepare their loved ones’ favorite foods and create altars adorned with cherished possessions. As a part of this meaningful celebration, La Reyna Bakery offers the traditional pan de Muerto, a delicious bread specifically associated with this holiday. Our pan de Muerto is freshly baked, capturing the essence of this solemn yet joyful occasion.
Another traditional Mexican holiday that we cater to is Roscas de Reyes, also known as the Day of the Kings or Dia de Los Reyes, celebrated on January 6th. This festive day marks the arrival of the Three Kings and is often accompanied by the exchange of gifts among loved ones. A centerpiece of this celebration is the Rosca de Reyes, a substantial loaf of bread that symbolizes the crown of the three kings. The Rosca de Reyes holds a delightful surprise, with plastic babies hidden inside. If your slice contains a baby, tradition dictates that you host a supper on February 2nd. Due to the popularity of this holiday, we encourage you to place your order for this festive bread at La Reyna Bakery as soon as possible to secure your share.
La Reyna Bakery takes pride in preserving the rich cultural traditions and delivering freshly baked delights that bring families and communities together during these special occasions. Allow us to be part of your holiday celebrations and savor the authentic flavors that embody the spirit of these cherished traditions.
La Reyna Bakery offers a variety of delightful pastries, including the famous Pan de Concha, which translates to “sea shell.” This daily offering is a treat for our customers, featuring a soft and fluffy bread base topped with your choice of pink, white, or chocolate sugar, resembling the beautiful patterns of a seashell.
In addition to the Pan de Concha, we also have the Concha and Lima pastries, which are crafted using the same high-quality ingredients as the Chilindrinas. These pastries draw their name from a beloved character, a freckle-faced child from the Mexican children’s program “El Chavo del Ocho.”
Another delightful creation from La Reyna Bakery is the Novia, meaning “the bride” in Spanish. These pastries are named after limes due to their resemblance to belly buttons. The Novia is adorned with a sugar-wrapped spiral-shaped dress topper, adding a touch of elegance to its appearance.
Furthermore, we offer the Granada, named after the pomegranate fruit, owing to its similar shape. These pastries are crafted with the same pan de novo (egg bread) ingredients as our other delectable treats. Our bakery takes pride in infusing these pastries with a sense of humor and whimsy, reflected in their creative and playful names.
La Reyna Bakery is dedicated to delivering not only delicious pastries but also a delightful experience. We invite you to explore our range of pastries, each crafted with care and attention to detail, bringing smiles and enjoyment to those who indulge in these sweet creations.
